PARENTING A CHILD WITH AUTISM
Being a parent to a child with autism is both a joy and a challenge. It’s a joy because our children are often pure of heart, kind, loving, loyal, funny, and feel deeply about things. It’s also a challenge because our children are easily frustrated, impatient, overwhelmed, fearful, and again, feel deeply, which can either be a blessing or a source of stress. Our children with autism are often the center of our lives, whether we have multiple children, careers or other interests. We go to sleep thinking about them, and wake up thinking about them. We want to make sure they are safe and can eventually adapt to the outside world, especially as they grow older.
I started Advocacy For Autism because I have been on this journey since my daughter was 3 ½ years old. She has made amazing progress, and I wanted to share with others what I have learned over the years. I’m also hoping that other parents can find encouragement, support and solidarity, knowing they are not alone on this sometimes crazy rollercoaster ride. Advocacy For Autism will hopefully become a mainstay companion on your own personal journey, and will help guide you along the way.
