ABOUT ADVOCACY FOR AUTISM

I would like to share with you my own personal story. My husband and I are older parents. We were married for 14 years before we had children. This wasn’t by design, but we made the most of it by traveling, pursuing hobbies, and focusing on our careers. When we were finally pregnant, we were overjoyed and anxiously anticipated their arrival. I gave birth to triplets at 33 weeks to a boy and two girls. All three children were in the NICU for several weeks and eventually came home healthy and without major complications. We didn’t see any developmental delays in any of them until 3 ½ years old. That’s when we noticed one of our daughters, Ava, was not talking as much, was a picky eater and was playing alone. We took her to see a child neurologist that was recommended by our pediatrician. It was then that we received the diagnosis of autism. At the time I wasn’t shocked by this news. I just wanted to get started on doing everything in my power to help her overcome this diagnosis if possible. The neurologist had explained that time wasn’t our friend and we had to get busy. We got busy through working with our regional center, our school district, ABA therapy and other outside services.

Through Advocacy For Autism, I will share information, tips, resources, successes, challenges and support, which will hopefully help you along the way.
